| (Axillary
Hyperhidrosis)
Do you have excessive underarm sweating? Do you
sweat even in cool climates? Do you find yourself
taking extra showers, wearing extra antiperspirant,
buying more clothes to replace those that have
been ruined by sweat? Do you carry any extra change
of clothes with you most of the time? If you have
answered yes to any of these questions, you may
have a medical condition called Axillary Hyperhidrosis
or excessive underarm sweating.
Millions of people throughout the world face
an isolating, embarrassing, and damaging struggle
every day from excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis
takes a toll on a person’s life but sufferers
and their families don’t need to suffer
in silence any more.
BOTOX (Botulinum Toxin type A) is a medication
that is injected subdermally into the skin to
treat hyperhidrosis. BOTOX Cosmetic acts by blocking
neurotransmitters that stimulate sweat production.
It is injected at 15-20 sites in the underarm.
What is BOTOX Cosmetic?
- BOTOX Cosmetic is a natural purified protein;
a medication that has been used to treat various
disorders related to muscle hyperactivity and
spasm.
- BOTOX Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in
2004 for the treatment of severe underarm sweating.
How does BOTOX Cosmetic work to treat
Hyperhidrosis?
- BOTOX Cosmetic works by temporarily blocking
nerves that stimulate sweating.
What is the BOTOX Cosmetic treatments
like?
- To determine the area to be treated, you will
have a Starch-Iodine test.
- A Starch-Iodine test is done by applying a
small amount of Iodine solution to the underarm.
After the iodine dries, starch is sprinkled
on the area. The area with active sweating will
turn dark blue in color. This will determine
where the injections will be administered.
- You will receive approximately 15 –
20 injections of BOTOX Cosmetic in each underarm.
- On average 50 units of BOTOX Cosmetic is used
per axilla.
When will I start to see results?
- You should start to see improvement of underarm
sweating within a few days and will continue
to improve for up to a week.
How long will the results last?
- BOTOX Cosmetic can last up to 6 months.
You should not have BOTOX Cosmetic if
you:
- Have a known hypersensitivity to any ingredient
in BOTOX Cosmetic.
- Have an infection at the proposed injection
site.

(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or motor neuropathy).
